How does a Country span expense work?
Choose Country under Duration when one payment covers your whole time in a country. TripTally spreads the amount evenly over every day of that stay, so your daily figures and the country budget each see a fair share instead of one expensive day.
What Country does
Open Add Expense, set the country, and pick Country in the Duration picker. The expense keeps its own date in the list, and its detail screen shows Entire country. In totals and charts, each day of the stay carries the same share of the amount. A 300 EUR SIM card over a 30-day stay adds 10 EUR to each of those days.
Where the stay dates come from
A stay is a trip segment. Record yours under Trip Settings → Trip Segments or from Budget → Manage Segments. If you have not saved one, TripTally detects the stay from your other expenses in that country: the first and last days you spent money there, extended by any multi-day expense. Detected stays appear in the segments list with an Inferred badge.
Saving a segment replaces the detected dates with yours. Any expenses you log outside those dates form a separate detected stay.
Two visits to the same country
If you spend money in another country between two stretches of expenses in the same country, TripTally treats them as two visits, each with its own dates and its own budget line. A Country expense follows the visit that contains its date. If no visit contains the date, it follows the nearest one. It never spreads across both. Date the expense inside the visit it belongs to, for example the day you bought the SIM card.
When there is no usable stay
Without a usable stay, the expense stays on its own date at its full amount. A detected stay counts only when at least one regular or multi-day expense fixes its dates. A stay that contains nothing but other Country expenses is no evidence of when you were there, so those expenses stay on their own dates until you add a regular expense or save the segment.
Good uses
- A SIM card or eSIM plan for the stay.
- A visa or entry fee.
- A car or scooter rental paid up front.
- A rail pass or transport card valid for the whole stay.
Limits
Country needs a country on the expense. Without one, the app asks you to select a country above the picker. It cannot be combined with Multi-day or Trip. Use Multi-day for a stay with known dates, such as a hotel booking, and Trip to spread a cost over the whole trip, such as travel insurance.
